The Spark: A Newbie vs. The British Climate
My Cozy Plant was started by founder John Cho, who entered the world of gardening as a complete beginner. Like many new growers, John quickly realized that keeping plants alive is harder than it looks—especially when dealing with the famously erratic and unpredictable British weather.
After carefully planting his first batch of tender greens and flowers, John relied on standard weather forecasts to tell him when to cover or protect them. One spring night, the weather app on his phone forecasted a safe 6°C. He went to bed feeling secure, only to wake up to a garden of black, frostbitten leaves.
He quickly learned that while the air temperature high above is relatively mild, the actual temperature right at ground level in a garden microclimate can easily drop below freezing.
"I had absolutely no idea how localized and harsh UK garden weather could be. Standard weather apps simply aren't built for gardeners. They miss the ground-level frosts and sudden temperature drops that happen in our backyards."
— John Cho, Founder
Turning Frustration into Code
As a developer, John decided to build the tool he wished he had. He wanted an app that didn't just tell him the general city-wide forecast, but warned him exactly when his specific plants were in danger based on soil-level microclimates.
What started as a personal passion project to save his own backyard soon evolved into My Cozy Plant. Today, the app helps gardeners around the world track hyper-local weather conditions, mapping soil-level fluctuations against personalized plant lists so nobody has to lose their hard work to a sudden, unpredicted frost again.
